Muscle Cramps & how to avoid them
Anyone who’s had Muscle cramps will know that they’re a nasty business! Some muscle cramps come and go and their reason isn’t entirely know. What we do know is that there are a number of factors that can contribute towards them:
Ageing
Exercise – putting too much strain on muscles
Medicine for lowering cholesterol (statins) or high blood pressure (diuretics)
Pregnancy – usually in the later stage
Liver disease – because of too much alcohol
Not drinking enough fluid (dehydration and salt imbalance)
So next time you get a muscle cramp what should you do? One of the things that can really help is to make a conscious effort to relax the muscle at the time of cramping and rub it at the same time. Make sure you top up on fluids; an electrolyte solution can help. Also work on your stretching and get a sports massage to aid recovery! 🙂
Don’t forget that if the problem persists, see your GP to be on the safe side.
